Understanding Couples Counseling
Couples Counseling in Vermont: Support for Partners
Couples counseling at Other Shore Counseling LLC offers a supportive, neutral space where partners can slow things down, understand each other more clearly, and work toward healthier ways of relating. Rather than focusing on who is right or wrong, therapy looks at the patterns—recurring arguments, emotional distance, miscommunication, or mistrust—that keep you feeling stuck. The relationship itself is the client.
Our work is affirming of all relationships, respectful of cultural differences, and welcoming of couples at all stages—dating, marriage, long-term partners, or navigating change. Each partner has space to be heard, while learning practical tools to improve communication and rebuild emotional safety. Reach out when you’re ready—or start with a conversation to see if this feels like a good fit.
Why Investing In Your Relationship Matters
When connection feels strained, it’s common to feel overwhelmed or unsure what to do next. Couples counseling can help reduce the intensity and frequency of conflict, strengthen emotional and physical intimacy, and clarify shared values and goals. Beyond immediate concerns, therapy helps uncover deeper emotional needs and long-standing patterns that may come from earlier experiences or past relationships. With support, partners often learn to replace criticism and defensiveness with curiosity, empathy, and mutual respect—creating a steadier foundation for the future.
Strong relationships aren’t conflict-free—but they can be strong, caring, flexible, and mutually supportive. Our couples work is Gottman Level 1: informed, drawing from decades of research on what helps relationships remain stable, resilient, and satisfying. This approach focuses on strengthening friendship and fondness, improving conflict management, and building shared meaning. This is available in person and via secure telehealth, making couples counseling accessible even with busy schedules, distance, or Vermont winters.
